Choosing the Right Tension Fabric Backdrop Size for Your Event in Singapore

Choosing the wrong backdrop size is one of the most avoidable event planning mistakes. Too small and your display looks underwhelming. Too tall and it won’t fit the venue. Too narrow and your team photo gets cropped. This guide walks you through every standard tension fabric backdrop size available at drops.sg, what each is best suited for, and how to make the right call for your specific event and venue in Singapore.

How Tension Fabric Backdrop Sizing Works

Tension fabric backdrops are sized by width x height in centimetres. Width is almost always the more important dimension — it determines how many people fit comfortably in frame and how much visual impact the display creates in the space. Height is secondary in most cases, constrained primarily by venue ceiling clearance rather than aesthetic preference.

At drops.sg, all standard sizes are available as full systems (frame, fabric print and carry bag) or as fabric-only reprints for existing frames. Custom dimensions beyond the standard range are also available — contact us if your venue or application requires something specific.

Understanding the Standard Size Range

150cm x 200cm — The Monolith Format

Despite being listed as a backdrop option, the 150cm x 200cm is better understood as a monolith banner. Its narrow width means it functions more as a tall standalone display than a traditional event backdrop. It is well suited for directional signage, single-brand displays, retail activations and any application where a vertical statement piece is needed rather than a wide branding surface.

It is not recommended as a photo backdrop — the width is too narrow for comfortable single-person photography and does not accommodate groups at all.

200cm x 200cm — The Mini Photobooth

The 200cm x 200cm is the entry-level backdrop size for photobooth applications. It fits one to two people comfortably in frame and works well for intimate activations, small corporate functions, office events and pop-up retail setups where space is genuinely limited.

For anything beyond a casual two-person photo, this size will feel tight. If your event involves group photos, team shots or any kind of media wall application, move up to the next size.

240cm x 230cm and 240cm x 240cm — The Sweet Spot for Smaller Venues

The 240cm width is the sweet spot for smaller Singapore venues — corporate meeting rooms, hotel function rooms, community club halls and seminar spaces. It accommodates small groups of three to four people comfortably, covers standard stage widths in intimate settings and fits through most venue doorways and lift lobbies without difficulty.

The choice between 230cm and 240cm height is largely a venue ceiling clearance question. Both heights work well aesthetically — the difference in visual impact is minimal. If your venue has a lower ceiling or you are setting up in a space with overhead obstructions, the 230cm height gives you more clearance to work with.

This size is also the most practical for one-person setup and transport. The full system packs into a carry bag that one person can manage comfortably through corridors, lifts and crowded exhibition build-up areas.

300cm x 230cm and 300cm x 240cm — The Exhibition Standard

The 300cm width is the de facto standard for Singapore exhibition booths. Most exhibition halls — including Suntec Convention Centre, Singapore Expo and Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre — allocate standard booth spaces of 3m x 3m. A 300cm wide backdrop fits precisely within this allocation, maximising the visual footprint of your booth without overrunning your space boundary.

This size comfortably accommodates groups of four to six people and is wide enough for step-and-repeat sponsor layouts to be legible in photographs. It is the most commonly ordered size for trade shows, corporate exhibitions and government roadshows in Singapore.

For venues with higher ceilings, the 300cm x 240cm offers slightly more visual presence. For tighter ceiling clearances, the 300cm x 230cm is the safer choice.

400cm x 200cm and 400cm x 250cm — Wide Format, Lower Profile

The 400cm width backdrops serve a specific application — wide format displays where ceiling height is restricted. A 200cm or 250cm height is manageable in most Singapore venues including those with lower ceilings, while the 400cm width creates a strong horizontal visual presence.

These sizes are well suited for entrance displays, reception area branding, wide stage backgrounds in low-ceiling venues and roadshow setups in shopping mall atriums where height restrictions are common.

At 400cm wide, this is no longer a comfortable one-person setup. Plan for at least two people for assembly and transport.

480cm x 240cm and 500cm x 240cm — Large Format Events

The 480cm and 500cm width backdrops are suited for larger corporate events, conferences and multi-brand exhibition setups where a wider branding canvas is needed. These sizes work well as stage backdrops for medium-sized auditoriums, wide media walls for press events and entrance displays for larger functions.

At this width, additional centre support pipes and base feet are required for structural stability. drops.sg includes appropriate support configurations for these sizes as standard. Setup requires at least two people.

600cm x 230cm, 600cm x 240cm and 600cm x 300cm — Stage and Feature Backdrops

The 600cm range is where tension fabric backdrops transition from booth displays to stage and feature installations. At six metres wide, these backdrops create a commanding visual presence and are suited for conference stage backgrounds, large exhibition feature walls, product launch stages and event entrance displays.

The 600cm x 300cm is the tallest standard option at drops.sg. The additional height is particularly effective for stage applications where the backdrop needs to be visible above a presenter or panel and fill the stage frame from floor to ceiling in taller venues.

At 600cm wide, setup requires a team and appropriate support structure. This is not a one-person deployment. drops.sg will advise on the correct support configuration for your specific setup when you order.

Do also note that at this size, the display area approaches and may exceed the threshold that triggers permit and venue approval requirements. Refer to our advisory on large format displays for guidance, and always confirm with your venue’s facilities management team before installation.

1300cm x 240cm — The Large Scale Installation

At 13 metres wide, the 1300cm x 240cm is a large scale installation rather than a portable display in the conventional sense. It is used for major stage backdrops, event hall entrance displays and large format branding at significant corporate or public events.

This size comes with a full additional support frame structure as standard and requires a team for assembly and deployment. It is no longer a self-install product. drops.sg will coordinate the appropriate support configuration and advise on logistics for orders at this scale.

Permit and venue approval requirements are highly relevant at this size. The grey area around Singapore’s regulatory requirements for large format structures means you should always engage your venue’s facilities management team and building management well in advance of your event. Our advisory on large format displays provides further context.

Practical Sizing Guidelines for Singapore Events

Width is the Priority

When deciding on size, settle your width first. A backdrop that is wide enough but slightly shorter than ideal will always look more professional than one that is tall enough but too narrow. Width determines how many people fit in frame, how much branding real estate you have and how the display reads in the space.

As a practical starting point: two metres of width per two people is a reasonable guide for comfortable group photography. Beyond that, scale up proportionally based on your expected group size and the visual weight of your design.

Account for What Goes in Front

One of the most common oversights in backdrop sizing is failing to account for what will be placed in front of the display. Tables, podiums, product displays, floral arrangements and AV equipment can all obscure the lower portion of the backdrop. If your event involves any of these elements, factor them into your size calculation — you may need a wider backdrop to ensure your branding remains visible on both sides of the obstruction, or a taller backdrop to keep key design elements above table height.

Venue Ceiling Clearance

Always confirm your venue’s ceiling height before finalising your backdrop height. Singapore venues vary significantly. Hotel ballrooms and convention halls typically offer generous ceiling clearance, while community club function rooms, shopping mall event spaces and office lobbies may have lower ceilings that restrict your height options.

The standard backdrop heights of 230cm and 240cm fit comfortably in most Singapore venues. The 300cm height option requires a minimum ceiling clearance of approximately 320cm to allow for the frame base feet and top clearance. The 1300cm x 240cm and other large format sizes may require additional venue consultation.

Exhibition Booth Allocation

If you are exhibiting at a Singapore trade show or exhibition, check your booth allocation dimensions before ordering. Standard booth allocations in Singapore are typically 3m x 3m. A 300cm wide backdrop maximises your visual footprint within this allocation. Going wider than your booth allocation risks encroaching on neighbouring exhibitors and may violate the exhibition’s display guidelines.

When in Doubt, Go Wider

If you are genuinely unsure between two sizes, go wider rather than taller. A backdrop that fills the horizontal space of your venue creates more visual impact than one that is tall but narrow. Width is also more forgiving — a backdrop that is slightly wider than your ideal can still work well in most settings, while one that is too narrow will always look undersized regardless of its height.

Large Format Considerations and Permits

For backdrop widths of 600cm and above, the display area may meet or exceed thresholds that trigger permit requirements or venue approval processes in Singapore. This is a grey area that depends heavily on the specific building, venue management and the nature of the installation.

As a general principle, always engage your venue’s facilities management team before installing any large format display. For government buildings, public spaces and major convention venues, approval processes may involve lead times that need to be factored into your event planning timeline.

drops.sg proactively flags permit and approval considerations for large format orders. Read our advisory on large format displays for more details.

Getting the Right Advice
